This week on Transit-Accessible Attractions we will be talking about the California Academy of Sciences.
The California Academy of Sciences is located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. It features an aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum, rainforest, 40,000 live animals, and more, all under one living roof. It opens at 9:30 AM on Monday-Saturday and 11:00 AM on Sunday. They close at 5:00 PM every day. Admission (As of 04/22/15) for adults is $34.95. Save $3 on admission when you walk, bike, or take public transportation.
The Academy Café inside of the academy is a great lunch option. It includes some tasty Asian dishes from Charles Phan (The Slanted Door). The Café is open to ticket-holders only.
To get to the California Academy of Sciences from public transit, MUNI line 44-O'Shaughnessy stops right in front of the Academy (Northbound), and at the Music Concourse on Tea Garden Drive (Southbound). MUNI line N-Judah, which is wheelchair-accessible at some stops, stops at 9th Avenue & Irving Street (Not Wheelchair-Accessible). For people in wheelchairs, get off at Judah & 9th Ave. To reach the Academy, travel north on 9th Avenue into Golden Gate Park. Ninth Avenue becomes Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Keep going until you reach Music Concourse Drive, then turn right and continue to the Academy's entrance. This half-mile walk takes approximately 10 minutes. If you prefer not to walk, you may also transfer to the 44-O’Shaughnessy bus at 9th & Irving or Judah & 9th Ave and ride to the Academy stop on Music Concourse Drive.
MUNI line 5-Fulton stops at 8th Avenue & Fulton Street, outside the park. From 8th Avenue, walk into the park and turn right on John F. Kennedy Drive. Then turn left onto Music Concourse Drive.
From BART, exit at Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, or Civic Center and transfer to the N-Judah one level above BART. From CalTrain, take the N-Judah outside the Caltrain Depot in San Francisco.
Stay tuned next week to see which attraction we'll feature next!
